It begins with a single event, like a meteor strike, and then shows the impact of that event as it ripples outward to change (and maybe save or destroy) the world its characters know. So Nightside The Long Sun - Book I - is extremely compact.
I think of Long Sun as taking place in the era of Typhon, in an iteration of the cycle that is much closer to your and my reality than the events of New Sun. Wolfe is clearly playing with the old "ghost in the shell' trope here. Typhon and his family were uploaded as powerful self-directing AI program's into the Long Sun's computer systems.
