Our new 2024 exhibition looks at the grammar school education from 1585 to 1909, using documents and objects to describe what the boys learned, read, wore, ate and what games they played.
The Grammer School is a unique experience in Hawkshead and should not be missed, the sense of the past is immediate, the stone stairs and the tactile desks where children sat for decades . There is also a curator who is excellent at describing school days in the past.

Hawkshead. Welcome to Hawkshead, a picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Lake District, Cumbria. Standing just north of Esthwaite Water, its pretty collection of stone houses and cobblestone streets have enchanted figures like William Wordsworth – who went to school here – and later, Beatrix Potter, who lived at nearby Hill Top House.
The Governors run the school as a museum and are working towards making the historic library collection available to the public. They also manage the remaining estate of the Foundation to raise funds for grants for the young people of the Ancient Parish of Hawkshead, per the charitable objects of the Foundation.
