He was born in Crailsheim, West Germany, the middle child and only son of Kraft, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (1935–2004) and his first wife, Princess Charlotte of Cro (b. 1938). Paternally, he is a grandson of Princess Margarita of Greece and Denmark, and a grandnephew of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, whose funeral he attended.
He had a brother named Christoph (1956–2006) and has two half-sisters, Arriana Theresa, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (b. 1975) and Désirée, Countess d'Ursel (b. 1980). Max von Hohenlohe, who competed at the 1956 Winter Olympics, was his uncle, and Prince Marco of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, 19th Duke of Medinaceli, was his first cousin.
They had two sons: Prince Christoph "Kiko" von Hohenlohe (1956–2006) and Prince Hubertus of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (1959–). He married his second wife Jocelyn Lane on 3 May 1973, in Marbella, with whom he had a daughter Princess Arriana Theresa (b. 1975). He married Marilys Healing (1941–2000) on 15 February 1991, in Vaduz.
Since the 13th century, Schloss Langenburg has been owned by the Hohenlohe princely family and is still the residence of the Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.
