5Woolf, Nicolson and Strachey were much concerned with the writing of history. Lytton Strachey, for instance, uses the terms ‘history’ and ‘historian’ in his preface to Eminent Victorians (Strachey 1918, 5). Woolf’s ‘The New Biography’ and its reference to a range of historians is in itself a historiography of the genre.
