In the 1740s, visionary landowner Luke Gardiner renamed the street after two-times Lord Lieutenant of Ireland Lionel Sackville and transformed it into the most sought-after address for 17th-century aristocracy and the Victorian Anglo-Irish who loved how it resembled London.
