Com proposta beneficente, o Live 8 buscava reviver o sucesso e a noção de ajuda humanitária que aconteceu três décadas antes, em 1985, no histórico Live Aid.
The event marked the first performance in 24 years by Pink Floyd's "classic" line-up (excluding Syd Barrett). It was also the last time they played together, as keyboardist Richard Wright died in 2008 of lung cancer .
O maior destaque do evento foi a apresentação dos Pink Floyd, pois a banda tocou no Hyde Park, em Londres, com a formação clássica pela primeira vez desde 1981.
