Towne had this grand story of the movie being about how the old Los Angeles was being destroyed by the new. He wrote that story to some extent but his friend Edward Taylor wrote at least half of the screenplay — certainly more than Towne did.

Taylor was the ultimate Mama's boy, catering to his wacky mother's every demand, including often sleeping in the same bed with her when he was a grown man.

I can't stand Kirk Douglas, but think it's likelier that she had a botched abortion resulting in her death, and was hastily buried in a shallow grave. That said, I don't think Kirk exactly shed a lot of tears when she disappeared.

Ann Talman played Taylor’s daughter in “The Little Foxes” and they remained close. I met Talman once because she was in a play with a friend of mine.

Sometimes all it takes is age - the age will knock the pretty off a beautiful man's face and he becomes handsome. JFK Jr is a great example of a really handsome man who was never a pretty man.
