Named in honor of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham and proponent for colonial independence, Pitt County was part of the five county split of Beaufort County in 1760. The county is home to East Carolina University and the Greenville Museum of Art, and it is host to several annual cultural events.
Pitt County, located in the Coastal Plain region of eastern North Carolina, was formed in 1760 from Beaufort County and named for William Pitt, earl of Chatham. Early inhabitants of the area included the Tuscarora Indians, followed by English and Welsh settlers.
