by Jay Mazzocchi, 2006. Northampton County, located along the fall line between the Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions of North Carolina, was formed in 1741 from Bertie County and named for James Compton, earl of Northampton. It is bordered in part by the state of Virginia.
The Colonial Assembly established Northampton County in 1741. Originally part of Bertie County, Northampton was created to allow residents a more conveniently located courthouse, and as soon as the legislature set the county’s boundaries a court was built in the center of the county.
Northampton County is situated at the center of America's Atlantic seaboard bordering Virginia on Interstate 95, the most heavily traveled north/south thoroughfare in America. Our county is within a one-day drive of 40% of the U.S. population.
