The North Country is the northernmost region of the U.S. state of New York, bordered by Lake Champlain to the east, the Adirondack Mountains and the Upper Capital District to the south, the Mohawk Valley region to the southwest, the Canadian border to the north, and Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence Seaway to the west.
North of the Adirondacks lies the North Country, the northern border of New York. Although more populated than the mountains to the south, this region is still dominated by the large areas between cities. Map.

New York State covers a land area of 54,556 mi² (141,299 km²), which makes it the 27th largest state by land size. It is about twice the size of Scotland and half the size of The Philippines. Compared to other US states, it is roughly the same size as Alabama.
New York State has a population of approximately 19.6 million people, with 8.3 million living directly in New York City. Hempstead Town, Brookhaven, and Islip are also major cities according to population size.
