Jackanory is a BBC children's television series which was originally broadcast between 13 December 1965 to 24 March 1996. The show's format was designed to stimulate an interest in reading, and usually involved an actor reading an abridged version of a children's novel or folk tale whilst seated in an armchair.
Jackanory: Created by Mary Tourtel, Alfred Bestall, Joy Whitby. With Bernard Cribbins, Kenneth Williams, Martin Jarvis, John Grant. A celebrity reads a story, enhancing it in ways that will entice the most restless of children.

It was designed to stimulate an interest in reading. [1] The show was first transmitted on 13 December 1965, and the first story was the fairy-tale "Cap-o'-Rushes" read by Lee Montague. Jackanory was broadcast until 1996, with around 3,500 episodes in its 30-year run.
