History. The town was founded in 1893 by Frank Hibbing, [9] born in Walsrode, Germany on December 1, 1856, and christened Franz Dietrich von Ahlen. His mother died when he was still in infancy and it was her name, Hibbing, which he assumed when he set out to seek his fortune in the New World.
Hibbing is located in the Northeast region of Minnesota in St. Louis County. Once called the "Iron Capital of the World", Hibbing traces its origins to a strong, viable mining industry. The community was established in 1893 by German miner Frank Hibbing, who discovered iron ore nearby.
Hibbing is home to the world's largest iron ore mine, which was discovered by Leonidas Merritt. Hibbing grew rapidly in its early years as the huge iron ore mines such as the Mahoning, Hull, Rust, Sellers, and Burt provided the raw material for America's industrial revolution.
The general nature and purpose of the Hibbing Historical Society shall be the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about the history of Hibbing, Minnesota, and its part in the story of the Mesabi Iron Range, St. Louis County, and the State of Minnesota.
The original Greyhound bus line was established at Hibbing by Carl Eric Wickman in 1914 as a commuter service between the old and new sites; a museum traces its development. The city is the site of Hibbing Community College (founded 1916).

History. The Original Building. The original structure was built in 1925 a total cost of $400,000. It was built on the site of the present-day Memorial Building, dedicated on September 18, 1925 to all World War 1 veterans. The dedication ceremony attracted 5,000 people and included a parade.
