A field marshal's stats and general-level traits apply to all generals under them at 50% of normal value. So if you get a really good general, you could promote them to Field Marshal, give them some Field Marshal traits, and they'd be giving big bonuses to all armies under them in addition to the bonuses from the generals themselves.
