Catarina nasceu no Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa, como a segunda filha sobrevivente de João, 8º Duque de Bragança e sua esposa Luísa de Gusmão. [ 3] Após a Guerra da Restauração Portuguesa, seu pai foi aclamado rei D. João IV de Portugal, em 1 de Dezembro de 1640.
