Biography. John Hay, 2nd Earl of Tweeddale (1626-97), was a member of the Privy Council of Scotland, 1660-73, and Lord Chancellor of Scotland, 1692-96. He became the 1st Marquess of Tweeddale in 1694. Hay married Lady Jean Scott (1628/9-1688), daughter of the 1st Earl of Buccleuch, in 1644, by whom he had seven sons and two daughters.
