Thirlestane Castle is a castle set in extensive parklands near Lauder in the Borders of Scotland. The site is aptly named Castle Hill, as it stands upon raised ground. However, the raised land is within Lauderdale , the valley of the Leader Water .

John Maitland, Chancellor of Scotland under James VI, was ennobled as Lord Maitland of Thirlestane and moved from his original home to the Castle, to build himself a new keep.
Dating back to the 16 th century, Thirlestane Castle is one of the oldest and finest inhabited castles in Scotland. It is the ancient seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale and has been home to the Maitland family for over 400 years.
