'Anthony Browne was the eldest of the six sons[1] of Sir Anthony Browne by his first wife, Alice Gage (d. 31 March 1540), the daughter of Sir John Gage of Firle, Sussex.

Viscount Montagu was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created on 2 September 1554 for Anthony Browne of the Noble House of Montagu. It became extinct on the death of the ninth Viscount in 1797. The title Viscount Montagu was chosen from line of descent from John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu.
Browne was born at Cowdray House, Midhurst, Sussex, in 1552, the eldest son and heir of Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montagu (1528–1592), by his first marriage to Lady Jane Radcliffe, a daughter of Robert Radcliffe, 1st Earl of Sussex.
ANTHONY BROWNE, first Viscount Montague [or Montagu], was the eldest son of Sir Anthony Browne (d. 1548) and Alys his wife, daughter of Sir John Gage. He succeeded his father in 1548, inheriting with other property the estates of Battle Abbey and Cowdray in Sussex.
