O termo "Austria" é uma latinização do nome germânico e foi registado pela primeira vez no século XII. Nessa altura, a bacia danubiana da Áustria ( Alta e Baixa Áustria ) era o extremo leste da Baviera e, de facto, de todos os alemães , pois, na época, o território da antiga Alemanha Oriental estava povoado com eslavos sorábios e eslavos polábios .
