The present Federal Law comprises the principles of the Russian Federation citizenship and the rules governing relations connected to the Russian Federation. citizenship, and establishes the grounds, conditions and procedure for the acquisition and termination of the citizenship of the Russian Federation. Citizenship of the Russian Federation shall be acquired and terminated in accordance with federal law, and shall be one and equal, irrespective of the grounds on which it is acquired.
Any person born in Russia automatically receives Russian citizenship by birth if at least one parent is a Russian citizen. Individuals born in the country to two foreign parents only receive Russian citizenship by birth if they cannot acquire the citizenship of either parent.
The new amendments to the Russian citizenship law, adopted in 2020, are designed to become one of the most important tools for strengthening Russian influence in the post-Soviet space.
