IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. More than 44,000 species are threatened with extinction. That is still 28% of all assessed species. Amphibians. 41% Mammals. 26% Conifers. 34% Birds. 12% Sharks & Rays. 37% Reef corals. 36% Selected Crustaceans. 28% reptiles. 21% Cycads. 70% Take action.
Vulnerable, Endangered and Critically Endangered species are considered to be threatened with extinction. The IUCN Red List will be updated with thousands of new species assessments and reassessments on Monday 11 December 2023.
IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Red List Index. The Red List Index (RLI) shows trends in overall extinction risk for species, and is used by governments to track their progress towards targets for reducing biodiversity loss.
Species assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), or Vulnerable (VU) are referred to as "threatened" species. However, Extinct in the Wild (EW) species can move into the threatened categories following successful reintroduction.
