An endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction. Species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and loss of genetic variation. Loss of Habitat. A loss of habitat can happen naturally. Nonavian dinosaurs, for instance, lost their habitat about 65 million years ago.
The IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria are intended to be an easily and widely understood system for classifying species at high risk of global extinction. It divides species into nine categories: Not Evaluated, Data Deficient, Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild and Extinct.
Vulnerable, Endangered and Critically Endangered species are considered to be threatened with extinction. The IUCN Red List will be updated with thousands of new species assessments and reassessments on Monday 11 D ecember 2023 .

How many species are threatened? Species assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), or Vulnerable (VU) are referred to as "threatened" species. However, Extinct in the Wild (EW) species can move into the threatened categories following successful reintroduction.
