  4. Leonard Bernstein recorded the Missa Solemnis twice in 1962: this recording in New York and later, in 1979, with the Concertgebouw for Deutsche Grammophon. The latter was positively reviewed here by Colin Clarke. This American recording was one of the first stereo versions.

  5. But a particular joy of Bernstein’s Amsterdam account is the beatific solo violin in the Benedictus, played with great eloquence and serenity by Herman Krebbers. If you’re new to the Missa Solemnis, this bargain Galleria disc is an ideal introduction to the work, as it is well played and recorded.

  6. Missa solemnis in D, Op. 123. Edda Moser (soprano); Hanna Schwarz (contralto); René Kollo (tenor); Kurt Moll (bass); Radio Chorus of the N. O. S., Hilversum; Concertgebouw Orchestra/Leonard Bernstein.

  7. This Panorama release pairs two of the choice items from Bernstein’s live Beethoven series, circa 1979-81. The Symphony No. 9, from his complete Vienna Philharmonic symphony cycle, remains one of the great performances for its bold concept, brilliant execution, and overall sense of drama.
