  3. Over the last 15 years, there has been increased recognition of how chronobiology impacts on health and disease. Chrono-nutrition extends chronobiology research and defines the emerging discipline of science surrounding the complex interactions between circadian biology, nutri-tion and metabolism.

  4. This weight loss study will investigate the impact of diet composition and meal size (large breakfast meals and smaller evening meals) on body weight, energy balance and eating behaviour, by altering calorie (meal) distribution.

  6. A major objective of the newly funded Big Breakfast Study therefore is to investigate the mechanistic basis of this amplified morning thermogenesis leading to enhanced weight loss, by exploring behavioural and physiological adaptations in energy expenditure alongside the underlying circadian biology.
