A CGI-animated pilot for the show was produced in 2001 by series creator Janice Burgess, based on a rejected live-action pilot from 1998 called Me and My Friends .
From 2001 to 2002, animators at Nick Digital created a computer-animated pilot episode for The Backyardigans. This was the second pilot made for the show.

Before Nickelodeon ordered the first season, two pilot episodes of The Backyardigans were made. The first was a live-action pilot titled "Me and My Friends," filmed at Nickelodeon Studios in September 1998. The characters were played by full-body puppets who danced on an indoor stage.

Me and My Friends is a first pilot for what would later become the hit animated series The Backyardigans. It was taped at Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, Florida in September 1998. It was declined by Nickelodeon, but the characters were later reworked into a CGI-animated pilot in 2001 (or 2002).
