Steven Sugar is the brother of series creator Rebecca Sugar as well as the inspiration for the main character, Steven Universe.[1] While he was a student at Rhode Island School of Design, he worked as a summer intern at Cartoon Network on Ben 10: Ultimate Alien.
In 2009, she wrote and animated Singles, in which frequent collaborator Ian Jones-Quartey acted as an assistant animator, assistant inker and voice actor on the project, while Sugar's brother Steven Sugar acted as an assistant colorist.

She has credited her own relationship with her brother as an inspiration for the show's close emotional bonds between characters. In 2019, Sugar married her boyfriend Ian Jones-Quartey. They had been romantically involved since 2008.
