Gifford Pinchot (August 11, 1865 – October 4, 1946) was an American forester and politician. He served as the fourth chief of the U.S. Division of Forestry, as the first head of the United States Forest Service , and as the 28th governor of Pennsylvania .
Pinchot was appointed as a special forest agent for the federal government in 1897 and was made chief of the Division of Forestry (later the Bureau) of the Department of Agriculture the following year.
Gifford Pinchot was a pioneer of U.S. forestry and conservation and a public official. Pinchot graduated from Yale in 1889 and studied at the National Forestry School in Nancy, France, and in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Upon his return home in 1892, he began the first systematic forestry.
