The bridge, which cost €60 million, is named for Irish writer Samuel Beckett (1906–1989). It was officially opened to pedestrians on 10 December 2009 by Dublin Lord Mayor, Emer Costello and to road traffic at 7 am the following day. The bridge won Engineers Ireland's 'Engineering Project of the Year' in 2010.

- Samuel Beckett Bridge. Essa é uma das pontes mais jovens de Dublin, inaugurada em 2009 e projetada pelo famoso arquiteto espanhol Santiago Calatrava. O nome da ponte é uma homenagem ao escritor de teatro Samuel Beckett e seu formato é o de uma harpa, símbolo da Irlanda.
- Mellows Bridge. Ao contrário da Samuel Beckett, a Mellows é a ponte mais antiga de Dublin, sendo construída em 1768. Sua estrutura anterior, chamada de Arran Bridge, desabou em 1763 após uma grande enchente na cidade.

The Samuel Beckett Bridge serves as the continuation of an existing street whilst creating a necessary link in the urban axis between Macken Street/Cardiff Lane and Guild Street. This cable-stayed balanced bridge with two unequal spans provides vehicular traffic and pedestrians access crossing the Liffey River.
