Gessle is the youngest son of plumber Kurt Gessle (1917–1978) and Elisabeth Gessle (1925-2013). He had an older brother, Bengt (1950-2014) and older sister Gunilla (1944-2016). Gessle married his long-time girlfriend Åsa Nordin (born 1961) in 1993 at Västra Strö Church, Eslöv, Sweden.
