The Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, commonly abbreviated to the Northern Ireland Protocol, is a protocol to the Brexit withdrawal agreement that sets out Northern Ireland’s post- Brexit relationship with both the EU and Great Britain. [1] The Withdrawal Agreement, including the Protocol, came into effect on 1 January 2021. [1]
The Protocol avoids a hard border on the island of Ireland after Brexit and protects the EU single market and the Good Friday Agreement. The Windsor Framework, agreed in February 2023, provides new solutions to address practical issues and safeguard the interests of people and businesses in Northern Ireland.
The Protocol sets out Northern Ireland's post-Brexit relationship with the EU and GB. It has been amended by the Windsor Framework and a new devolution deal in 2024 to address Unionist concerns.
