Wollstonecraft casou-se em 1797 com o filósofo William Godwin, um dos ancestrais do movimento anarquista. Antes disso, já possuía uma filha, Fanny Imlay nascida em 1794, fruto de uma aventura amorosa anterior. A autora morreu aos 38 anos, deixando para trás vários manuscritos inacabados.

Mary Wollstonecraft, considerada a primeira feminista da história, escreveu “Uma reivindicação pelos direitos da mulher” como uma forma de contestar vários pensadores de sua época, inclusive iluministas, por entender que estes ignoravam o problema das mulheres.
8 de abr. de 2024 · Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (née Godwin) met the young poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1812 and ran off with him to France in July 1814. The couple were married in 1816 after his first wife committed suicide. After his death in 1822, Mary returned to England and helped publicize his writings.

Gradually, Wollstonecraft returned to her literary life, becoming involved with Joseph Johnson's circle again, in particular with Mary Hays, Elizabeth Inchbald, and Sarah Siddons through William Godwin.
