The Penitent Magdalene is a wooden sculpture of Mary Magdalene by the Italian Renaissance sculptor Donatello, now usually dated to around 1440. The sculpture was probably commissioned for the Baptistery of Florence. The piece was received with astonishment for its unprecedented realism.
Traditionally identified as the woman who was a sinner and wept on Christ’s feet and wiped away her tears with her hair ( Luke 7:36-50), Mary Magdalene is shown here as the hermit saint she became upon giving up her life of moral decadence, after her encounter with the Savior.
14 de out. de 2023 · Sometime between 1400 and 1410, before he created the Penitent Magdalene, Donatello created a Crucifix for the Franciscan basilica of Sante Croce. It is regarded as his first masterpiece as a truly independent artist and was completely carved from a solid piece of pear wood.

Paolo Veronese`s Penitent Magdalene, 1583, reflects the change occurring in Venetian religious painting around 1580. On one hand, the new order of priorities imposed by the Council of Trent (1545-63) emphasised subjects such as the Eucharist , penitence and the martyrdom of the saints.
Penitent Magdalene. First quarter of the XVII century. Oil on panel. Not on display. This painting entered the Prado from the Museo de la Trinidad, most of whose works were from religious institutions in Madrid or the surrounding provinces.
