Erté (1892-1990), "La Danseuse", 1985, bronze sculpture, height: 34.5 cm, signed, dated and numbered 157/500.
At age 87, Erte, renowned fashion and theatre designer began a series of bronze sculptures to international acclaim. This example is dated 1985, #129 of 500. This lithe bronze dancer, delicately decorated in gold and silver, leaps joyfully over red flames.
During his prolific years at Harper's, Erte designed 250 covers and numerous drawings for its pages and diversified into a variety of other artistic activities. After a fling in Hollywood designing for extravagant silent films including Ben Hur, Erte left the magazine to create sets and costumes for theater and opera.
