Hanayama is an immensely powerful gangster who mostly relies on his raw physical power and his grip. His grip is so strong that if he grabs an opponent's arm he can usually cause it to explode from constricting the blood flow like he did with Yuri Chakovsky. The dude used a pistol to shoot him, stuck his middle fingers in Kaoru’s ears, etc. Speck pulled out all the breaks he had and his actions were good enough only to slow Hanayama down for a short while. Hanayama absolutely decimated Speck with ease, and just because he didn’t speed up the process doesn’t mean he struggled.
In the second series of the manga, Spec used the Tameshi Wari trick in his fight with Kaoru Hanayama. They were fighting on the street and Spec did it with Hanayama's head and bitumen. Later, Hanayama used it against Spec in the same fight.
After a gruesome fight, Hanayama defeats Spec by using his Vice Grip to crush his throat/windpipe/carotid artery. After losing to Hanayama, Spec falls into a coma and is transported into a medical facility where the doctors reveal his true age, 97 years old.
