A police dog, also known as a K-9, is a dog that is trained to assist police and other law enforcement officers. Their duties may include searching for drugs and explosives , locating missing people , finding crime scene evidence, protecting officers and other people, and attacking suspects who flee from officers.
A K-9 unit is a specialized group of law enforcement officers who use service dogs to perform the responsibilities of a general police officer. In addition to their usual duties, each K-9 officer is also a dog handler, meaning that they have to train and care for their canine partner.
Used as a means of law enforcement widely across the United States, Police K-9s usually serve in the force for 6 to 9 years. In many countries, the intentional injuring or killing of a police dog is a criminal offense.
