  1. My favorite John Singer Sargent painting is Corfu:Lights and Shadows. Even though I love his portraits, “Corfu” struck me in a very significant way. The first time I saw it I was flipping through an art catalog. I saw the picture and before I saw the caption I felt like I knew exactly where it was.

  7. Sargent found the remoteness and solitude of the sparsely populated island conducive to painting. Blaney is shown perched atop a rock outcropping poised to work at his easel. Sargent uses brilliant blue highlights throughout the composition to suggest effects of light and shadow.
