The Gando Primary School was built to expand the sparse network of schools in the province of Boulgou, in the east of Burkina Faso, and addressed two characteristic problems of many educational buildings in the area: poor lighting and ventilation.

Diébédo Francis Kéré Kéré Architecture Burkina Faso Following the strategies applied at the Primary School in Gando, the main aim of the project was to design a sustainable school that would adapt to the extreme conditions of Burkina Faso.
The Gando Primary School Extension features four additional classrooms and a sunken seating area in the middle where students can enjoy shade between classes. Together, the two buildings form an “L” shape, defining what has now become an important gathering space in Gando.
This school, in a remote settlement in the south of Burkina Faso, is the expression of one man’s commitment to improve living conditions in his village. It also represents the involvement of a whole community in the construction of a building that symbolizes the first step towards this improvement.

Kéré was born in the village of Gando, which lies in Burkina Faso, West Africa, and was the first member of his community to attend school.
