The architecture of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, inaugurated in 2010, is out of the ordinary. Its iconic roof, the remarkable volumes of Le forum and its grande nef, the diversity and flexibility of the exhibition spaces, are all conducive to inventiveness and surprises.
This annex for the Pompidou Centre in Paris, was built in Metz as a complex including an art museum and theatre. By locating a large roof in the park, and by opening the glass shutter façade around the perimeter, a continuous transition of the interior and exterior space is created.
En 2020, à l’occasion des 10 ans du musée, le PTS de Shigeru Ban a pris place dans le jardin. C’est dans cette structure architecturale singulière que le Centre Pompidou-Metz a été dessiné, imaginé, créé, avec Jean de Gastines.
The first trend, which has become widely known as the “Bilbao Effect”, was born from the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, designed by Frank O. Gehry and completed in 1998. The strategy was to create sculptural architecture in an internationally unknown city to draw tourism, and it was ultimately a success.
A large tent-like structure shapes the new outpost of the Centre Pompidou in Metz, 300 kilometers from Paris in the northeast of France. A series of stacked volumes accommodates the museum program under this enclosure.
