For the And Justice For All album, Metallica was using Mesa Boogie amps. The amplifier settings were different between songs, and some also had clean parts. There was more mid-range in some songs than before.
You could try using a Tube Screamer as a boost also (max volume, 0 drive, as much tone as suits your guitar). It will sound different from And Justice For All, but is very good for palm mutes. Gets you an Agent Orange tone pretty easily, which I think is far better than And Justice For All.
