Pelo terceiro ano consecutivo, Ayrton Senna e Alain Prost decidiam o título da F-1 em Suzuka. Senna chegou ao Japão com 78 pontos, nove pontos de vantagem para Prost no Mundial de Pilotos. Para levantar o seu segundo título da Fórmula 1 antes mesmo da última prova, bastava o brasileiro fazer mais pontos que o francês.

Ayrton Senna arrived in Japan with 78 points, nine more than Prost in the Drivers’ World Championship. In order to win his second Formula 1 title even before the final race, he only had to out-point the Frenchman.
