19 de dez. de 2011 · Synopsis. The first volume of the novel, opening in Edinburgh in 1736, is dominated by the Porteous Riots. A condemned criminal Andrew Wilson has helped his accomplice 'Robertson' (the assumed identity of the reckless young nobleman George Staunton) to escape.
Set in the 1730s in a Scotland uneasily united with England, the novel dramatizes different kinds of justice: that meted out by the Edinburgh mob in the lynching of one Captain Porteous, and that encountered by a young girl on trial for infanticide.
