The Annunciation is a key topic in Christian art in general, as well as in Marian art in the Catholic Church, having been especially prominent during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. A work of art depicting the Annunciation is sometimes itself called an Annunciation.
17 51, the Feast of the Annunciation, fixed on 25 March so as to come exactly nine months before Christmas, was counted as the beginning of the calendar year, but since then it has fallen into almost total oblivion, remembered only as an appendage to the Christmas story which might be used to heighten the mysterious quality of the Nativity.
This unique Annunciation scene was later interpolated into a longer life of Christ compilation, Meditationes domini nostri, another understudied Middle English text. This borrowing demonstrates the significance of Mary’s model for reading and meditating on the very texts within which she appears.
