Monmouth Castle Ruins. Today's meagre ruins give little insight into this once important early Norman castle which was built by William FitzOsbern, a nephew of the Conqueror, to protect the settlement beside the confluence of the Monnow and the Wye.
Description. The monument consists of the remains of a castle, dating to the medieval period. Monmouth Castle was built between 1067 and 1071 by William Fitz Osbern, close consellor of William the Conqueror, as part of the Norman campaign to control Wales and the Marches.
Castle Highlights. Once home to King Henry IV and the birthplace of Henry V, Monmouth Castle mostly goes unnoticed on the outskirts of Monmouth. It provides a tranquil setting to relax among gardens and ruined stone walls.
