Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott PC QC KCMG (March 12, 1821 – October 30, 1893) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the third prime minister of Canada from 1891 to 1892. He held office as the leader of the Conservative Party .

He was the first Canadian-born prime minister, as well as the first to hold the position from the Senate rather than the House of Commons.

LEGAL AND TEACHING CAREER. A graduate of McGill College, John Abbott was admitted to the bar and began practicing law in 1847. He later went on to specialize in commercial law. In 1853, he began a long and distinguished teaching career at McGill, continuing until 1876, and was dean of the Faculty of Law from 1855 to 1880.
Abbot was a in the Senate and 70 years old when he became Prime Minister. He was from Quebec and had opposed Confederation and had in fact supported joining the United States.
