27 de out. de 2021 · Chad made progress in reducing poverty, from 47 % in 2011 to 42 % in 2018. But the COVID-19 crisis has threatened economic and social gains, pushing the country into recession and hundreds of thousands of Chadians into extreme poverty.
Poverty and vulnerability are pervasive in Chad, with 42.3% of the population living below the national poverty line. Extreme poverty ($2.15/day per capita [PPP 2017]) also remains high in the country and has risen significantly, from 31.2% in 2018 to 34.9% in 2021 and 35.4% in 2023. The World Bank's Human Capital Index for Chad is 0.30.

Based on these estimates, 84.2 percent of the population in Chad (14,461 thousand people in 2021) is multidimensionally poor while an additional 10.7 percent is classified as vulnerable to multidimensional poverty (1,832 thousand people in 2021).

And while half of the population lives in extreme poverty, Chad provides asylum and allows humanitarian relief to 480,000 refugees and almost 300,000 internally displaced people. Chad is a young country: 65 percent of the population is under 25 years of age - the median age is 16.8 years.
