23 de set. de 2014 · While hunting one day, Penthesilea accidentally killed her sister Hippolyta with a spear. This caused Penthesilea a great deal of grief, and led her to wish for death. However, as a warrior, and an Amazon, she could only die honorably and during battle. Penthesilea (1862), by Gabriel-Vital Dubray (1813-1892).
When kneeling before Hector's corpse, Penthesilea promises to avenge his death. Penthesilea fights at the side of the Trojan army, killing many Greek soldiers, but is slain by Achilles' son. In this tradition of the legend, her body is taken to the Thermodon for burial.

Penthesilea, in Greek mythology, a queen of the Amazons, well respected for her bravery, her skill in weapons, and her wisdom. She led an army of Amazons to Troy to fight against the Greeks. She was said to have killed Achilles, but Zeus brought him back to life, and Achilles killed her.

A less common story tells of how Penthesilea lived up to her boast, and did indeed kill Achilles when the pair met on the battlefield, but Achilles was restored to life by Zeus after Thetis implored him to do so. It was then the resurrected Achilles who killed Penthesilea.
For several days they fought fiercely, and many were killed. Finally Penthesilea wounded Neoptolemus, and then fell at his hands; in spite of his wound, he cut her down. The death of Penthesilea, the queen of the Amazones, caused all the Trojans to turn and flee in defeat for their city.
Death of Pentesileia. According to most stories Pentesileia was killed by Achilles, who fell in love with her after the death of the Amazon and killed Tersites for mocking him.
