The House of Windsor came into being in 1917, when the name was adopted as the British Royal Family's official name by a proclamation of King George V, replacing the historic name of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. It remains the family name of the current Royal Family.

A Royal home and fortress for over 900 years, Windsor Castle, the largest occupied castle in the world, remains a working palace today. Windsor Castle is used regularly for Investitures at which honours recipients receive their medals from a member of the Royal Family in the Grand Reception Room.

There have been four British monarchs of the House of Windsor: King George V, King Edward VIII, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. In Windsor today the George V Memorial Fountain commemorates this event.
Queen Mary's Dolls' House was built between 1921 and 1924 for Queen Mary, wife of George V, by the leading British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. It includes contributions from over 1,500 of the finest artists, craftspeople and manufacturers of the early 20th century. The House is on permanent display at Windsor Castle.
