Cyrus performs "We Can't Stop" at the VMAs before stripping down to a skin-colored two piece to perform a duet of "Blurred Lines" with Thicke. The controversial performance got more people talking about Cyrus and Thicke (but mostly Cyrus) than ever before in their entire careers. They literally broke Twitter. It was a madhouse.
Cyrus and fiancé Liam Hemsworth call off their engagement. The popular rumor at the time is that Hemsworth was as appalled by her VMAs performance as everyone else was. This also gave just about everyone the opportunity to make a joke about Cyrus' relationship not "twerking" out.
