The song was part of the demo tape, No Kung Fu, which Del Rey sent to various producers in order to find a producer for her album. This demo, "Ruby", is also featured on a 3-track mixtape (alongside "Roller Dirby" and "Kill Kill") that was given to Del Rey's friend and Fordham professor, Mark Naison. Another demo of the song, titled "Little Girls",...

The song's lyrics were written by Del Rey herself, and the lyrics have no other admitted author. It seems as if the song is about a little girl (who is an actress) being taken advantage of. It could be an indication of child sexual abuse from examining the lyrics. It was also inspired from one of her favorite books, “Lolita”.

There is one known performance of "Put Me in a Movie". Del Rey performed the song at Mercury Lounge on September 20, 2008. Footage of this live performance is available online.

    Background and description

Del Rey created a homemade music video for the song, possibly in 2008, which features clips of Del Rey herself singing along to the song and clips she gathered from old films - the usual style of her old music videos. There is also a second version that lacks some scenes and is shorter than the original one.

The line "lights, camera, acción" also appears in various incarnations in other songs such as "Heavy Hitter", "Daddy Issues" and "High by the Beach".
The phrase "little girls" is also used in "I Don't Wanna Go" and "Butterflies, Pt. 2".
An old stage name used by Del Rey, "Sparkle Jump Rope Queen", is referenced in the song.
Del Rey also tells someone "you can be my daddy" in "Ride" and "Be My Daddy".
