Robert John Service FBA (born 29 October 1947) is a post-revisionist British historian, academic, and author who has written extensively on the history of the Soviet Union, particularly the era from the October Revolution to Stalin's death.
Professor Service's research interests cover Russian history from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Nowadays he is focussing on Russia in its international framework. He is currently working on the geopolitics of the Russian Revolution as well as a study of the end of the Cold War.

Robert Service is, along with his adversary Orlando Figes, one of Britain’s best-known experts on Russia. Educated at Cambridge and Essex Universities, he currently holds a professorship at Oxford and is a prolific writer, penning eight books on modern Russian history.
