The cast included Edward J. Pawley (later of Big Town fame) as Elmer Gantry and Vera Allen as Sister Sharon Falconer. The 1960 film of the same name starring Burt Lancaster as Gantry and Jean Simmons as Sister Sharon Falconer. A 1970 Broadway musical adaptation, titled Gantry, opened and closed on the same night, February 14, 1970.
Lancaster played the title role in Elmer Gantry (1960), written and directed by Richard Brooks for United Artists. The film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor. Lancaster won the 1960 Academy Award for Best Actor, a Golden Globe Award, and the New York Film Critics Award for his performance.

Based on the Sinclair Lewis novel, which blew up a storm of controversy when it was published in 1927, Elmer Gantry stars Burt Lancaster in the title role as a hard-drinking appliance salesman in the Mid-West who turns revivalist preacher – although his yen for wine, women, and money is reflected in his many conquests in violation of the seventh commandment.
